COM 313: Group Project Description

Identify a public relations challenge faced by an organization that you are interested in. You are to propose a public relations campaign by identifying the concepts and principles you learned in class and describing how they can be used to resolve the public relations challenge. The three components of this project are:

Paper proposal/outline (5%)
Self and peer evaluation (5%)
Final paper (15%)

Part I: Paper Proposal

Due Date: February 13th

Description: Your proposal should provide a background on your selected organization and the public relations issue or challenge it faces. You may use bullet points in your outline if you wish. Feedback on the proposal will be returned to you within two weeks.

Required elements (taken from Exhibit 12.4, p. 276)

Defining the problem (see chapter 11)
The problem, concern, or opportunity
Situation Analysis (internal and external)
The problem statement
Planning and Programming (see chapter 12)
Program goal statement
Target publics

Format & Style:

Please email me an electronic copy by the beginning of class
4 – 5 pages minimum (not including references)
Typed, double-spaced, with 12-point font, and 1-inch margins
Sources must be cited in APA style (for both in-text citations and references)

Part III: Self and Peer Evaluation

Due Date: March 15th

Description: At the completion of your project, you will evaluate your performance and contribution as well as your peers’ performances and contributions. The template for the evaluation is posted on Blackboard, in the Assignments folder, along with the other group project documents. Please use evaluation form posted on Blackboard. Please turn in your completed evaluation form for via Turnitin on Blackboard by 11:30am.

Part II: Final Paper

Due Date: March 15th

Description: The final paper should be a detailed public relations strategic plan. It should also incorporate the element of research (how will you use research in each step of your four-step process). Below is a description of the required elements of the paper; please note, however, that the paper will likely be best formatted according to the recommended outline posted on Blackboard, rather than using the outline below.

Step 1: Defining the problem (see chapter 11)
The problem, concern, or opportunity
Situation Analysis (internal and external)
The problem statement

Step 2: Planning and Programming (see chapter 12)
Program goal statement

Communication strategy and tactics

Step 3: Taking Action and Communicating (see chapter 13)
Coordinating action and communication
Program implementation plans

Step 4: Evaluating the program (see chapter 14)
Evaluation plans
Feedback and program adjustment

Format & Style:

12 to 15 pages, including title page and references, but excluding tables, graphs, and appendices (more than 15 pages is acceptable and will not be penalized)
Typed, double-spaced, with 12-point font, and 1-inch margins
Sources must be cited in APA style (for both in-text citations and references)
Please turn in an electronic copy via Turnitin on Blackboard by 11:30am (only one person in your group need to turn the paper in)
